Saw a screening of a documentary, The Right to Read. which explained how modern methods of 'teaching' children to read just don't work, irrespective of race and socioeconomic status, however, certain groups of people have access to more resources to assist their children than others. The NAACP will be holding legislators to task about this important civil rights issue.
Thirty-five percent of children in grades 3-8 read 'proficiently' or on grade level. What can we do to help our young children learn to read? In this 'Age of Technology' , a child is more likely to pick up an electronic device than a book. How can we help our children get interested in books? Community Health and Gardens (CHG) wants to help. CHG gave away over 100 reading books to readers of all ages at the Juneteeth Parade in hopes of encouraging young people to read over the summer vacation.
CHG is working on establishing a 'Read by Fourth' campaign by becoming Reading Captains in our West Philly neighborhood. Look for the location and dates for our 'Read by Fourth' campaign.
